Throughout history mankind has delivered many astonishing projects, take the Colosseum for example: An army of workers took less than 10 years to complete it in 80 AD, using 100,000 cubic meters of travertine marble. To accomplish this, project leaders relied on organizational innovations & a well-recognised importance of Logistics. How would they have managed to keep the workers busy had their logistics supply failed and they lost their supply of marble?

Today, large projects in the oil & gas industry face similarly daunting challenges as they become increasingly complex, remote and technologically demanding. Schedules and budgets are tight, safety is crucial, and every project faces a network of stakeholders that are rightfully concerned about its impact on the environment and communities. Even so it is without doubt that throughout history every project has relied heavily on logistics including such  ground-breaking projects from the past, as the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Wall of China. Great current day examples where this is so vividly evident are Gorgon LNG and Prelude FLNG.

Our experience working with projects in the resource sector suggests experienced talent is not only essential, it is often not enough. Successful large projects follow a coherent, consistent framework that guides their actions, decisions and processes. We can’t emphasize enough the criticality of early involvement of Logistics Expertise in projects. A good example of successfully early involvement of Logistics Expertise can been seen at Shell’s flagship project Prelude FLNG; the original design only had one helideck not two helidecks as in the current built.
